DIY Musical Instrument Tailgate Party

In April, a group of musical inventors held a tailgate party at Stanford University. The DIY Musical Instrument Tailgate Party, a meet-up style gathering, included demonstrations and performances by instrument builders on invented and homemade instruments. Visiting artist Trimpin, known for his own musical and sound inventions, served as an honored guest and grand marshal of the festivities. Organized like a traditional car show, instrument inventors were invited to “open their hoods” and show off inventions to each other and the general public.

The Tailgate Party was jointly presented by Stanford University and the Bay-Area nonprofit organization Thingamajigs, which promotes, presents, and performs music and other art forms created with made and found materials and alternate tuning systems. The 13-year-old group presents other programs, including an annual Music for the People and Thingamajigs Festival, which invites artists, like Terry Berlier (designer of the pictured Percussion Ball), who design their own musical instruments to join in a festival of workshops, music making, and performances. Held in September each year, the San Francisco festival also invites people of all ages to participate in instrument building and educational workshops, as well as listen to unique performances.
